PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) applies to trailers used for work purposes, mandating that they are safe, fit for purpose, and regularly inspected and maintained. In addition, the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 require that vehicles and trailers are kept in a condition that does not pose a danger to anyone in or near the vehicle, or to other road users. The frequency and scope of trailer inspections depend on the type of trailer and how often it is used. However, it is strongly recommended that trailers undergo daily pre-use inspections or checks before each journey. These inspections focus on essential safety elements, including the hitch and coupling system, lights, tires, brakes, load security, and overall structural integrity. Regular inspections allow operators to detect early signs of wear, damage, or mechanical failure, reducing the risk of accidents and costly repairs.
